Fulbright Specialist Program

Program Description

This program is designed for Mexican institutions who wish to apply in order to host a US Fulbright Specialist for a period of between two and six weeks.

This program was developed to provide short-term Fulbright grants of two to six weeks to qualified U.S. scholars. The program goals are to increase the number of U.S. scholars in Fulbright academic exchanges and to promote increased connections between U.S. and Mexican universities or institutions.

Security Policy

The commission follows the recommendations of both the Mexican government and the U.S. Embassy Travel Warnings when placing US Fulbright grantees in Mexico. This may mean that placement will be restricted in certain states or areas of Mexico depending upon these recommendations.

Grant Activity

Fulbright Senior Specialist activities will be designed to provide U.S. faculty and professionals with opportunities to collaborate with professional counterparts on curriculum and faculty development, institutional planning and a variety of other activities. For example, in the grant period of two to six weeks, specialists may:

• Conduct needs assessments & surveys.

• Take part in specialized academic programs or conferences in conjunction with other activities.

• Consult with administrators and instructors of post-secondary institutions on faculty development.

• Present lectures at graduate and undergraduate levels.

Roster
The Fulbright Senior Specialist Program differs from the traditional Fulbright Scholar competition in that the Council for International Exchange of Scholars (CIES) will build rosters of specialists in a variety of fields through an open application process. Applicants recommended by specialist peer review committees and approved by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board will become candidates for Fulbright Senior Specialist awards. As countries request Fulbright Senior Specialists through their local Fulbright Commission, candidates will be matched with appropriate programs. When a request is received, Fulbright Senior Specialist candidates will be contacted to ascertain their availability for final consideration.

If the project is approved, the Fulbright grant for the specialist will include a round-trip plane ticket (from the US to MX), plus $200 USD honorarium per working day.
