This grant provides U.S. students studying a master’s or Ph.D. degree the opportunity to pursue a 6 or 9 months research or arts project in Mexico. Candidates with terminal master’s degrees are also eligible.

Candidates with terminal master’s degrees are also welcome to apply. Candidates with only a bachelor’s degree will not be considered for this award, and are encouraged to apply to one of our other U.S. Student programs: Binational Business, English Teaching Assistant or Graduate Degree Program.

Applications will be accepted in all fields of study except medicine, veterinary medicine and dentistry.

Security Policy

The commission follows the recommendations of both the Mexican government and the U.S. Embassy Travel Advisory when considering U.S. Fulbright grantees host sites in Mexico. This means that locations may be restricted to certain states or areas in Mexico depending these recommendations.

• Fluent in Spanish

• Minimum degree: MS/MA or currently enrolled in a master’s program (Candidates who are not in a Master's program or higher will not be considered).

• Candidates studying, living or working in Mexico during the application process are not eligible to apply.

• Candidates who currently have a temporary or permanent resident card to Mexico are not eligible to apply.

• Double citizenship candidates are eligible to apply.

• Filled out application: Please complete all required fields and upload all required documents.

• Program Information: On the Program Information page, applicants must provide a Field of Study, a clear Project Title, and an Abstract/Summary of the Proposal. These sections should concisely present the what, where, and why of the proposed project, allowing reviewers to quickly understand its purpose and relevance.

• Statement of Grant Purpose: It is a key component of the application, outlining the who, what, when, where, why, and how of the proposed project. It should present a clear, feasible, and compelling plan aligned with the selected award and Mexico. Applicants must demonstrate the project’s academic value, feasibility, and relevance, as well as their qualifications and commitment to engaging with Mexico’s community and promoting cross-cultural exchange.

• Affiliation Letter: Affiliation with a Mexican institution or organization is required, and all applicants must list a proposed affiliate. A letter of affiliation must be submitted at the time of application. The letter must come from the host institution or collaborator, be written in or translated into English, printed on official letterhead, and signed (electronic signatures are accepted).

• Foreign Language Form: For Mexico, the required language level is advanced, and applicants must demonstrate sufficient proficiency to complete their project. All applicants must submit both the Language Self-Evaluation and the Foreign Language Evaluation (completed by a qualified evaluator). Failure to submit these forms will result in the application being considered ineligible.

• Recommendations: Applicants must submit three recommendation letters from individuals who can speak to their academic and professional preparation, adaptability, community engagement, and potential as cultural ambassadors. Recommenders must be registered in the online application system to upload their letters directly; applicants should use institutional email addresses when possible and notify recommenders to expect the system-generated email.

• Transcripts: You must provide transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate institutions from which you received degrees. Transcripts must also be submitted from other institutions where you studied and received 12 or more credits for coursework where the credits are not reflected as transfer credits on your undergraduate transcript.  

• Portfolio (for art applicants): Applicants in the creative and performing arts must submit a portfolio of their work, which will be evaluated alongside the written application by experts in the field. The portfolio should reflect the proposed project, highlight the applicant’s artistic strengths, and be compiled in a professional manner, as artistic and technical skills are a primary evaluation factor.

• Ethical Requirements (if applicable): Applicants proposing research involving human or animal subjects should have their projects reviewed by their home institution’s Institutional Review Board (IRB). If selected, grantees may also need to obtain research clearance by their host institution; affiliation letters should reflect the host institution’s support in this process.

Applicants are encouraged not to repeat information provided in other sections of the application.
