The Fulbright-Carlos Rico Award for North American Studies offers an unparalleled opportunity to conduct a research project in both Canada and Mexico. The aim of the award is to enhance collaboration between leading North American scholars working on projects concerning important issues facing the United States, Mexico and Canada. This award can be held at any university, government agency or research institution in Canada and Mexico.

Projects across a broad range of disciplinary and interdisciplinary focuses are welcome. However, it should be shown that the research focus promotes collaboration and adds value to the current body of research inherent in our trilateral relationship which is shaped by our shared borders, current events and common interests.

Projects may include a variety of activities throughout the course of the grant period:

• Engaging in collaborative research in grantee's area of specialization.

• Consulting on curriculum and capacity building.

• Engaging in program and faculty development.

• Conducting seminars and workshops for various academic and professional audiences.

In addition to being a prestigious academic exchange program, the Fulbright Program is designed to expand and strengthen relationships between the people of the United States and citizens of other nations and to promote international understanding and cooperation. To support this mission, Fulbright Scholars will be asked to give public talks, mentor students, and otherwise engage with the host community, in addition to their primary research or teaching activities.

• Candidates living, working or studying in Mexico are not eligible to apply.

• Candidates must have U.S. citizenship. Dual citizens are welcome to apply.

• Candidates with a permanent resident card in Mexico are not eligible to apply.

• PhD required.

• This award is open to all levels of scholars including early career.

• Intermediate proficiency in Spanish is required. The level of Spanish language proficiency must be commensurate with the requirements of the project. Applicants must submit a language proficiency report.

• A letter of invitation from a qualified Mexican university, accredited institution or research facility is strongly preferred at the time of application. Grantee must provide a letter of affiliation before grant start date.

• Four to ten months to be divided evenly between Canada and Mexico. Longer-term grants are preferred. Grants can begin no earlier than August 1 and must end by June 30.

• A fixed sum allowance of $12,500 for one semester will be provided.

• No international airfare included.

• No dependent allowance included.

• Airfare to attend Welcome Orientation or Midyear reunion at local rates.

• $2,000 USD held against Final installment pending completion of grant obligations.

Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed by Zoom or videoconference.

Projects must be four to ten months and the time split evenly between Canada and Mexico. Grants can begin no earlier than August 1, 2026 and must end by June 30, 2027.

The commission follows the recommendations of both the Mexican government and the U.S. Embassy Travel Warnings when placing US Fulbright grantees in Mexico. This may mean that placement will be restricted in certain states or areas of Mexico depending upon these recommendations.
