With the goal of creating mutual understanding between the private sectors of Mexico and the United States, the U.S.-Mexico Commission for Educational and Cultural Exchange (COMEXUS), which is the Fulbright Commission in Mexico, supports internships in Mexican and multinational companies through the Binational Internship Program for U.S. Students. During a ten-month period, each grantee interns at a company or organization while taking MBA courses at a Mexican university.

Grantees will be placed in participating businesses and organizations, and will also take courses related to international business at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México (ITAM). The most significant component of the program is the internship; on which grantees will spend about 80% of their time. 

In recent years, COMEXUS has placed grantees in a variety of organizations, including traditional and multinational companies, financial institutions, start-ups, and NGOs. In Mexico City, these workplaces have included Angel Ventures, Grupo Coppel, Casa Dragones, ITAM Epic Lab, Endeavor, FTI Consulting, and Educación para Compartir, among others. 

Important Notes:

    • COMEXUS is unable to guarantee placements in specific companies, sectors, industries, and/or regions.

    • Fulbright grants in Mexico are known as “Fulbright-García Robles” grants.

    • Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be conducted in Spanish. Please note that an advanced level of Spanish (B2 or equivalent) is required for this program.

    • Shortlisted candidates may also be asked to complete an additional activity to evaluate their technical and soft skills.

Security Policy:

COMEXUS follows the recommendations of both the Mexican government and the U.S. Department of State Travel Advisories when placing U.S. Fulbright grantees in Mexico. This may mean that placement will be restricted in certain states or areas of Mexico depending upon these recommendations. See U.S. Department of State webpage for detailed information.

Special Application Instructions:

• In the Preliminary Questions section:

    1. Select ‘Study/Research Award’ under ‘Award Type’ 

   2. This award is not considered a graduate degree award, and applicants must therefore select ‘No’ when asked whether their grant proposal includes graduate degree enrollment.

    3. Select ‘no’ when asked if applying to a Multi-Country Award.

• Choose ‘Binational Business Program’ under ‘Award Selection’.

• Choose ‘Business’ for ‘Field of Study’.

• Grantees are not required to submit a research or study project in order to apply for this grant. If included, this should be considered an additional activity and must not interfere with the internship.

• In the Statement of Grant Purpose, the following three points should be addressed:

    1. Areas where the applicant could benefit from and make the best contribution to a Mexico-based company conducting international business;

    2. Aspects of the applicant’s academic background (coursework, workshops, special courses, particular interests, etc.) and professional experience (specific jobs and internships) that would allow the applicant to benefit from the experience and contribute during the internship and in the classroom; and

    3. Expected benefits from the internship and courses, and their relationship to the applicant’s future career plans.

• Applicants should not include a letter of affiliation or proposed affiliations from any Mexican institutions in their application, as COMEXUS will place all grantees with their host company or organization.
